A Guide To Making The Perfect Jam

Jam is the product of fruit boiled down to its purest form, usually resulting in a thick, spreadable, sweet mixture. Making jam usually involves combining water, fruit, sugar, and other ingredients to create a smooth, thick, and flavorful product. It is often an accompaniment to meals such as breakfast or dinner or in the center of baked foods such as scones or donuts. There are many different kinds of jams made from various fruits, such as strawberry jam, blueberry jam, and raspberry jam. Different fruits also have different levels of sugar. For example, orange jam has less sugar than pineapple jam.

Step 1: Pick The Berries

If you are looking to make your jam, you will need to pick your fruits first. Pick the ones that are the ripest, the plumpest, and the ones that have the most juice. Since fruit can vary in ripeness, time of the season, and weather conditions, it’s essential to check the fruit before you begin making jam to make sure you’re picking the right ones.

Step 2: Wash The Jars And Lids

Some jam recipes call for you to wash the jar and lid. It is not a bad practice to follow, but there is little reason to wash the jar and lid with some recipes. In most cases, the jars and lids can be washed and then reused. To keep the lids clean, wash them with hot soapy water and rinse them well. Then place a damp cloth over the lid and gently wipe the inside of the lid with a clean cloth. After washing, dry the jars and lids well so they will be ready for use.

Step 3: Wash And Hull The Fruit

The third step in making homemade jam is to wash and hull the fruit. Wash the fruit in water and sort through the ones that have gone bad or cut off pieces that appear bruised. Make sure to remove any leaves, pits, or seeds from whatever fruit you choose to use.

Step 4: Crush The Fruit

The jam-making process is one of the most critical steps in making your jam. The main objective of crushing the fruit is to release the juices from the fruit. Therefore, when you are ready to make jam, you will need to crush your fruit.  To “crush the fruit” with your hands, squeeze the fruit’s flesh, but do not mash it.  Mashing is not necessary for making jam. The fruit with juice can make the jam juicy as well as smooth. It also helps in removing the seeds from the fruit as it makes the jam sticky.

Step 5: Measure Out The Sugar

Measuring the sugar will depend on which fruit you use and how sweet you like your jam. Some people like it sweeter, while others like it sour. Use the amount of sugar you desire. A good ratio to follow is ⅓ cup of sugar to 1 cup of fruit.

Step 6: Mix The Fruit With The Pectin

You can cook more than one way to make jam, but cooking pectin with fruit is the best method to create high-quality jams that retain their fresh taste. Bring the fruit to a boil and add the pectin. Let it boil for a few minutes or until slightly thickened. The pectin helps the jam to concentrate and to be of proper consistency.

Step 7: Get The Lids Warming In Hot Water

Pour the cold water into your pan. Place your jars and lids in it. Let it make up for a few minutes. Depending on the type of jam you are making, step seven in the jam-making process is boiling the jam for a few minutes or heating the lids in a small pot of water to ensure they are not sticky. In the case of the strawberry jam recipe, you want the lids to be very hot when you’re pouring the hot jam into the jars.

Step 8: Add The Remaining Sugar And Bring It To A Boil Again For 1 Minute

Add the remaining sugar and bring it to a boil, stirring again for 1 minute.

Step 9: Skim Any Foam

Skimming the excess foam off your jam helps reduce the chances of it curdling when boiled, which is especially high in the winter when it is cold out. In addition, it will help you smooth out the jar so you can easily reach in and grab a serving of jam.

Step 10: Taste And Serve It

In the tenth step of the jam-making process, it’s important to taste and serve the jam to ensure that it is adequately cooked and has a smooth texture. Next, taste it to allow the jam to cool, then put it in the refrigerator.

Conclusion
