How To Find Food If You’re Stranded In The Wilderness

Seafood

If you find the sea, river, or any major body of water around, you can be at ease because these are full of protein-rich foods, and most of them are naturally edible. You can quickly source fish to receive omega-3 fatty acids and some protein. And since it is high in protein, the body’s standard requirement for protein content can be easily met, which will keep you strong and healthy for a long time. You can also find other animal sources with a high amount of protein, such as crab, lobster, etc. By setting up a basic fireplace using sticks, and wooden blogs, you can also cook the seafood quickly.

Avoid Anything Too Bright

Yes, bright food items are super attractive and may seem completely edible. This is when you must remember the phrase “beautiful but deadly” because these bright, attractive, potentially edible things are often poisonous. The bright colors that they acquire are because of the poison that they hold. So, be it an extremely bright-colored insect, animal, mushroom, fruit, or reptile, it is best to stay away from it unless you are super sure about what it is. Even when it comes to berries that look too bright, try to avoid them because there are hundreds of types of berries, and not all of them are edible.

Do A Basic Edibility Test

If you fall short of seafood, fruits, and other edible things, and it comes down to strange, unknown things, do a simple edibility test. For instance, if you come across a fruit, vegetable, or plant, attentively smell it. In most cases, poisonous plants or flowers leave a strong and unpleasant smell. If it smells natural to you, have a small bite of it, and notice the impact on your body. If you don’t sense any harm in the next few hours, it is probably safe, and you can have more of it. However, if it smells funny, it is best to leave it the way it is and look for other possible alternatives.

Conclusion

All in all, there are many options to eat in the wilderness and satiate your hunger. The key here is to find what’s right for you and will keep your hunger satisfied for a long time. Animal protein is always advisable because, in most cases, it is edible and can keep your energy level maintained for a long time.
