Everyone that wishes to enter the outdoors should possess at least two methods to starting a fire, one should be kept on their person at all times, while the other should be with their equipment. It is important to note that several smaller fires will provide more heat than one larger fire. An individual should gather all the firewood that they believe they will require for the night and then gather that same amount again, experience from persons that have been in situations in the wilderness bears evidence that it is needed. Fuel should be conserved by starting with a star fire, this is where the ends of the firewood meet in the fire only, then push them inward as additional fuel is required. Create a reflector from the space blanket on the rear wall of a shelter in order to reflect the heat from the fire to your back, then lie between the back of the shelter wall and the fire.
The shelter is defined as the skill in which an individual protects their body from too much exposure to the snow, rain, wind, cold, or sun. Any and everything that adds to or takes from the overall body temperature of an individual could be their enemy in a survival situation. The first line of shelter defense is the clothing that a person has on, individuals should have the correct clothing for the correct environment. Hats are always considered a plus. Do all that is within your power to ensure that the clothing layer that is closest to the body remains dry. Wearing multiple layers of clothing with trap air and this method is also warmer than wearing just a single thick layer. If nature naturally provides a shelter for you, then do not waste time and extra energy trying to build one yourself. Always practice building a fast lean-to shelter in the event that you become lost and unable to locate the campsite. Use the space blanket to insulate the shelter, stop dampness, or wrap up while squatting or sitting in order to focus the body’s core heat.
This survival skill is very unique, in that it provides the individual the means and capability of alerting any potential rescuer that they are in dire need of help. Whistles, mirrors, flags, bright color markers, flashing lights,s, and fire are all potential tools in aiding an individual in being located. The internationally recognized signal for distress is three fires placed in a triangular formation. Cautiously and carefully create a bank around the signal fires, so as to prevent setting fire to the surroundings. Only when you see persons in the distance or a plane should regular signal mirrors be used. Utilize an emergency strobe light during the night in order to attract attention from others that could be in close proximity. In order to attract attention, make a smoky fire using organic materials placed over the fire during the daytime. Place ground messages in open fields or clearings, SOS from colored clothing, logs or rocks, or anything that will be visible against the background. Water and food are vitally important for anyone’s survival. An individual should ration their sweat, but not their water intake, as a human could survive up to three days without water.
